Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy
Xiao Yang, General Manager of Quarterly Auctions-Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy Department
The 52nd China Guardian Quarterly Auctions concluded in a tense and warm atmosphere. First of all, thank you for the support from collectors, experts and friends from all walks of life. Although their starting prices were relatively low, Huang Zhou’s Girl and Camel, Zhu Da’s Mountain Scenery, and Wang Yuanqi’s Landscape were sold at reasonable prices, showing the confidence and trust of customers in China Guardian Quarterly Auctions. In the 52nd Quarterly Auctions, we are actively responding to the adjustment of the contemporary, modern and ancient painting and calligraphy sections under the artistic market environment. There were joys and sorrows; at the same time, we also found a lot of new market growth points, and will focus on more adjustments in the next round of the consignment. Autumn is harvest season. With friendship and trust, we will continue to move forward in the market's development.
The total turnover of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy is nearly 50 million yuan.
More than 1,800 paintings and pieces of calligraphy were selected from the Chinese painting and calligraphy session of this auction. Many excellent works of modern and contemporary paintings, ancient paintings and calligraphy also were presented. Among them were fine works by Qi Baishi, Wu Changshuo, Zhang Daqian, Pu Ru, Li Keran, Wang Xuetao and Chen Shaomei, and representative works of different schools and themes, such as Li Xiongcai, Chen Zhidong, Gong Wenzhen, Li Geng, Li Jin and Chen Yuyuan. There also were distinctive ancient paintings and calligraphy with various themes, reflecting the China Guardian Quarterly Auctions’ style of paying attention to academic guidance and highlighting characteristics of the works. Buyers also showed great enthusiasm. The auction was lively and warm. The total turnover of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy was 49.356 million yuan.
In the four specially prepared sections of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy, the turnover rate of the two sections, Modern Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy and Master Pieces by Modern Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy Artists, was gratifying, reaching about 80 percent. There also were some highlights in Modern and Contemporary Ink Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy and Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy. Some of the items even exceeded the estimated value more than 100 times, reflecting the precise and original vision of the collectors, and also contributing a new growth point to the market.

Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art
Liu Yang, General Manager of Quarterly Auctions-Porcelain and Works of Art Department
This time, the total turnover of the Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art session reached nearly 50 million yuan, which was higher than that of the same period last year. I think the market is still changing, mainly because people's preferences have changed. Apart from traditional items, people are obviously more interested in small pieces that can be held in their hands. At the same time, the collectors are not confined to the category of items, and do not care about its original price. They pay more attention to the playful, enjoyable quality of the goods. In this auction, the price of some traditional items was lower than before, but they should still be the mainstream of the market, and should not be ignored in the future.
Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art reached a turnover rate of 86.24 percent.
There were more than 2,000 pieces of items at the auction. All the exquisite works, including those from the official kilns of the Ming and Qing dynasties, folk kilns, monochrome glaze sketches, inkstone and brushes, bamboo and wood carvings, bronze ware, cloisonné enamel, and bronze and gold statues of Buddha can be collected, displayed, and enjoyed. And many of the items were at a very low price, so that the collectors competed fiercely. The total turnover of Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art session reached 48.2552 million yuan, with the turnover rate as high as 86.24 percent. It released a strong signal that the market is optimistic.
Each of the well-planned four sections - Porcelain Collections of Guardian's Companions, Treasure & Pleasure in the Palm, Charm of the Important Porcelains, and Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art – had highlights, all of which maintained an amazing high turnover rate and from time to time emerged with an unexpected high transaction price. Some items with an estimated price of thousands of yuan were sold for hundreds of thousands or even millions of yuan, which not only made people see new collection hotspots, but also greatly increased the confidence of the vast number of collectors in the market.
