Character by Huang Zhou
A painting by Huang Zhou (1925-1997), a Chinese painting master, was sold at 7.245 million yuan at the 29th China Guardian Quarterly Auction, taking the lead in the sales of Chinese paintings and calligraphy sessions.
The lot 421, Character, was produced by Huang in the 1970s and took five years to complete. Diligent, creative and persistent, Huang combined Western sketching skills and traditional Chinese painting to capture the movement of people and animals. His paintings focused on the ethos of Chinese ethnic groups and ordinary people and highlighted a peaceful relationship between humans and nature.
Other highlights included lot 334 Landscape by Fu Baoshi (4.255 million yuan), lot 336 Landscape by Huang Binhong (2.76 million yuan), lot 338 Cock by Qi Baishi (1.995 million yuan) and lot 257 Character by Fan Zeng (1.995 million yuan).
