The highly anticipated China Guardian 2012 Spring Auctions, which started on May 12, realized a total sales of 2.06 billion yuan within four days.
Sessions sold Chinese paintings and calligraphy, porcelain, artworks, furniture, Chinese oil paintings and sculptures, rare books and manuscripts, high-value watches, clocks, jewelry and jadeite.
“The overall atmosphere of the Spring Auction is much improved and many categories have seen exciting results, with some items sold at prices far exceeding their pre-sale estimate,” said Wang Yannan, president and director of China Guardian, “Specifically, this time we adopted a new registration mode, but it didn’t have any negative effect on the enthusiastic bidders. So we can see the art market still presents much room for growth.”
The 2012 Spring Stamps and Covers, Coins, Banknotes and Bronze Mirrors Auction will run from May 16 to 21 at Beijing International Hotel.
ALBUM AFTER SONG MASTERS
The Chinese Painting and Calligraphy section collected 1.189 billion yuan, with 17 single items exceeding 10 million yuan. Among the highlights are ALBUM AFTER SONG MASTERS (47.15 million yuan), two classical Chinese painting albums produced by Jiang Tingxi (1669-1732). Jiang was one of the most prestigious court painters in the Qing Dynasty and was mainly noted for his works on birds and flowers. In addition, POEM ON PAINTING HORSE IN RUNNING SCRIPT by Li Dongyang (1447-1516) was sold at 17.25 million yuan in the Classical Chinese Calligraphy session.
The Painting and Calligraphy of Yangzhou School session brought 55.60 million yuan, selling 75 percent by lot. The paintings are known for their rejection of orthodox ideas about painting in favor of a style deemed expressive and individualist.
SHAOSHAN-REVOLUTIONARY SACRED PLACE OF CHAIRMAN MAO'S FORMER RESIDENCE, a contemporary painting by Li Keran and 141.5×243.1 cm in size, was sold at 124.2 million yuan, a new record high price in the Spring Auctions.
In the session of Sincerity of Literati: Painting and Calligraphy by Twentieth-Century Scholars, many items were sold at a price ten times higher than the pre-sale estimate. SEVEN-CHARACTER POEM IN REGULAR SCRIPT by Zhu Ziqing (1898-1948), a renowned Chinese poet and essayist, was sold at 16.1 million yuan.
Results of the session On the Earth: the Development of Modern Chinese Figure Painting exceeded expectations, reaching 65 million yuan; New World of Contemporary Ink Painting session obtained 13.8 million yuan, with 90 percent of items sold by lot. BIRDS AND TREES, a painting by Wang Mingming, was sold at 59.8 million yuan in the Contemporary Ink Painting session, a record price for the painter.
The Porcelain, Artworks and Furniture section raked in 638 million yuan, with nine items over ten million yuan.
HUANGHUALI LONG TABLE WITH SINGLE-PLANK TOP AND EVERTED FLANGES
The Immortal Beauties: Classical Furniture from the Ming and Qing Dynasties session brought in 170 million yuan. HUANGHUALI LONG TABLE WITH SINGLE-PLANK TOP AND EVERTED FLANGES was sold at 32, 20 million yuan, the highest price within the same category, closely followed by ZITAN LUOHAN COUCH-BED, which was sold for 20.7 million yuan.
Thirty-five items in the Treasured Playthings from the Scholar's Studio -The Jiansong Ge Collection was 100 percent sold by lot, bringing 120 million yuan. A RARE AND FINE CARVED DRAGON, ZITAN BRUSH POT, the favorite of Wang Shixiang, an expert on historic relics in China, was sold at 55.20 million yuan.
In addition, Collection of Chinese Ancient Porcelain brought in 119 million yuan, with four single items over ten million yuan. Fine Gilt-Bronze Buddhist Images, the first session dedicated to Buddhist images, reached 27.72 million yuan in sales. GILT-BRONZE AVALOKITESHVARA produced in the Ming Dynasty, after several rounds of bidding, was sold for 4.025 million yuan.
Five sessions of modern and contemporary artworks contributed 127 million yuan. Works by leading artists, such as Zhong Liansheng and Li Jusheng, Li Xiaocong and Bai Lei, all registered record high prices. In addition, works by Qian Song, Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi attracted growing attention from collectors. Their purchase prices saw a steady growth in the Qingning-Modern and Contemporary Seal Art session.
MASTERPIECE OF THE RED CLASSICS - REVOLUTIONARY IDEALS TOPS AL
Chinese Oil painting and Scripture section brought in another 160 million yuan. MASTERPIECE OF THE RED CLASSICS - REVOLUTIONARY IDEALS TOPS ALL by Shen Yaoyi was sold at 40.25 million yuan. Measuring 185 cm in width and 375 cm in length, the painting is widely seen as the most magnificent Red Classic painting of recent auctions. An oil painting 13.2.92 created by Zao Wou-ki in the 1990s was sold at 12.075 million yuan. In addition, DOUBLE-SIDE PAINTINGS: STANDING YOUNG WOMAN AND OLD MAN STANDING WITH A STICK by Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was sold for 8.16 million yuan.
The Rare Books and Manuscripts section gained over 34 million yuan. One of the highlights was YING ZAO FA SHI (2.185 million yuan), a technical treatise on architecture and craftsmanship published in the Song Dynasty. The volume was given by Liang Qichao as a gift to his son Liang Sicheng when he was engaged to Lin Huiyin. Another highlight was JIN XIU WAN HUA GU, which was sold for 1.8975 million yuan.
The Important Watches, Clocks, Jewelry and Jadeite section realized a total sales of 39 million yuan. VACHERON CONSTANTIN - Model Lord Kalla was sold for 2.07 million yuan. EMERALD AND DIAMOND NECKLACE AND EAR-PENDANTS was sold for 2.815 million yuan and DIAMOND RING for 1.84 million yuan.
