At that time Zhang Daqian went to Hualian to enjoy the beautiful scenery of red plum blossoms and was accompanied all the way by Mr Wen Tao, then the chief of the police station, who was also responsible for Zhang’s security. Zhang Daqian drew this painting specially in memory of the experience.

Nearly 40 pieces of artworks selected this time are all drawn in the 1980s, such as Wang Yong’s the Scent Lotus, at the Foot of Mount Huangshan, Zhao Wei’s Folk Song along the Road and at the Foot of the Great Wall, Chen Xiangxun’s Spring Wind and Drizzle of the Regions South of the Yangtze River, Fisherboat and Tian Liming’s the Wild Mountains, Woods, and Bathing and so on. The size and shape of the artworks are of uniform style and they’re well-preserved and brimming with originality. Most of the artworks were put on display before and were the representative works of contemporary artists exploring new ways of painting. These works have been hidden from the public by collectors for more than 20 years and will come into the spotlight in the auction. So it can yet be regarded as a great opportunity for collectors.

The calligraphies and paintings of the Republic of China are favored by collectors due to their wide selection and moderate prices. There are many works of great artists in this auction for collectors’ selection such as the works of Pu Xinshe, Huang Junbi, Xiao Qianzhong, Wu Hufan, Qian Shoutie, Feng Chaoran, Song Meiling, Qi Gong, Zhao Puchu and Yu Youren.

Ancient paintings and calligraphies require the highest level of experience and judgments of the purchasers. Meanwhile these artworks bring most fun and are full of intriguing stories. The majority of the Chinese ancient paintings and calligraphies selected in this auction are painted or written by Six Famous Painters of Qing Dynasty years (with four surnamed Wang and the other two surnamed Wu and Yun respectively), Four Monks during the late Ming and early Qing period and the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou. The painters of the lots also vary from Huang Gongwang and Zhao Mengfu in Yuan Dynasty years, Dong Qichang, Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin, and Qiu Ying in Ming Dynasty years to Four Painters Surnamed Wang of Qing Dynasty and Four Painters Surnamed Ren of the Hangshang art style. They are works of extreme high levels that are rarely seen and preserved in good conditions. These artworks will definitely bring upsurge for the auction of ancient paintings and calligraphies.

Porcelain and works of art

There are three special shows including 2100 lots in the porcelain artwork category.

There’re a group of seal stones collected by owners of Beijing in the special show called Fun on Palms and Pleasure in Heart, many of which were the private collections of experienced craftsman making seals of Shou Stone. Among this batch of private collections of Beijing citizens, the tin fetus kettle made by Lu Kuisheng and collected by Xu Shizhang is worth great attention. The artwork is in rectangular shape with a fetus made of tin and painted with special lacquer. It is of simple but exquisite workmanship with shallow ornamentation on both sides, one side showing a scholar rowing on the river, and the other demonstrating a scholar talking about the ultimate truth in the wild mountains. The shallow ornamentation displays spirituality and natural essence of the way of cutting which honors intangible artistic conception rather than over elaborate techniques.

The blue and white jar with Panchi pattern of Kangxi period in Qing Dynasty highlights the porcelain show. The jar is of huge size but is still in good shape and structure without any deformation. This clearly shows the superb porcelain making techniques of the Kang Xi period in Qing dynasty years.

Besides, the famille rose jar with patterns of flowers and birds of Guang Xu period in Qing Dynasty is of rather high quality and it is also made by famous artists during that period. The jar is in neat shape and structure with excellent fetus glaze. There are two lines of six characters written in regular script at the bottom of the jar showing that it is made in Guang Xu period of Qing Dynasty. The jar is of straight bottleneck and bulging and long body. In the middle of exterior of the jar, two humming birds sporting among plum blossoms and chrysanthemum were vividly drawn with thick and smooth paint. The delicate drawing technique shows the superb artistic attainments of the craftsman.

There will be a special show of Buddhism cultural relics in the jade artworks show. The gilding bronze guanyin figure of the 18th century in Qing Dynasty and a bronze Guanyin figure of the early period of Qing Dynasty are highly recommended to the collectors.

Exquisite Kettles Made by Famous Masters

There are nearly 110 exquisite kettles over a hundred of years in the special show arranged for exquisite kettles made by famous masters. It is a great opportunity to appreciate the beauty of metal artworks.

The dragon-head pure gold kettle of He style made by junior Qin Zangliu catches the eyesight among all the artworks. It is made by junior Qin Zangliu (1854-1932)whose father was a very famous metal works artist in the history of Japan making the seal of Emperor Meiji. Junior Qin Zangliu inherited the style of his father and did a much better job than him while there are few of the artworks made by junior Qin Zangliu passing down. The dragon-head gold kettle was made of pure gold with a plump shape and an outline full of power. Its high quality and shining sleekness can be seen clearly. The body of the kettle is simply designed with two shining lines decorating both the top and the middle of it which features strong contrast with the rest of the kettle. Thus, the body of the kettle gives the viewer a three-dimensional look. The smooth lid with an arc-shaped knob on top of it matches the arc-shaped lifting handle elegantly. The straight spout is designed with a pattern of a dragon head, showing a kind of primitive simplicity.

In addition, junior Qin Zangliu (1854-1932)made the silver kettle as a memento of the prince’s wedding together with Tomioka Tessai in order to celebrate the wedding of the Eastern Palace prince of Japan. Tomioka Tessai was a famous craftsman at that time. The four characters he engraved on the kettle are full of power and spirituality, expressing wish for longevity. The characters perfectly matched the vivid engraving patterns and the chrysanthemum-shaped knob. The exquisite memento expresses the wish for a harmonious union lasting a hundred years.

The preview of the auction will be held from December 12th to 14th, and the auction will run from December 15th to 17th.Both the preview and the auction will be held at the Beijing International Hotel Convention Center.
