China Guardian, one of China’s oldest auction houses, has announced that the company will be collecting items in Singapore from Aug 17 to 18 for its autumn sales, which start in November.
Vice-president of China Guardian, Hu Yanyan, said: “Singapore is quite an influential art market in Asia, and China Guardian attaches great importance to the area. We hope that in this consignment campaign, we can communicate more deeply with local collectors and provide them with even better services.”
After a slump in 2012, the Chinese art market has seen steady growth this year. For example, China Guardian brought in a total of 3.33 billion yuan ($543 million) from its five sales in the first half of 2013. About 2.65 billion yuan of the total comes from spring auctions.
The art market has also registered many record prices. A total of 39 pieces sold for 10 million yuan and above, three of which sold for over 50 million yuan.
The highlights include Zhang Daqian’s painting Lady Red Whisk (71.3 million yuan), a fine imperial white jade “自強(qiáng)不息” (Zi Qiang Bu Xi) seal (66.7 million yuan), along with Wu Zuoren’s painting The Yellow Blooms on the Battlefield Smell Sweeter, which sold for 80.50 million yuan, a record price for a single piece by the artist.
