Two other sessions on Chinese paintings and calligraphy were also held yesterday: The Han Hong Lau Collection of Modern Painting and Calligraphy as well as Fine Contemporary Paintings, the first special auction of this kind of paintings ever held by China Guardian. The former sale was concluded at RMB24.56 million yuan. The latter was concluded at RMB19.63 million yuan, representing a 100% sold rate. Apart from works by old masters like Pan Tianshou, Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian and Fu Baoshi, which remained extremely popular at the auction, prices for medium-ranged items also showed considerable increase.
The fourth session for the first day of auctions was Collection of Lin Song, Stamps and Covers. The highlight of the sale was a soldier design stamp of Chinese Soviet Posts 1/2 cent (Lot 3356), which sold for RMB429,000 yuan. The total sale of the session was RMB8.65 million yuan.
China Guardian 2005 Spring Auctions will continue at the Kunlun Hotel on May 14 and May 15, 2005 with items including ceramics, embroidered articles, oil paintings, rare books and jadeite.
