China Guardian’s 2007 Spring Auctions Set to Begin on May 9th
2013-12-13

China Guardian’s 2007 Spring Auctions will take place at the Kerry Center Hotel from May 9- May 13, 2007. Over 5,600 items from each of our various departments will be auctioned, including Classical, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, Oil Painting and Sculpture, Contemporary Art, Porcelain and Works of Art, and Rare Books and Manuscripts. Auctions of lots from our Coins, Stamps and Bronze Mirrors department will take place at a different time and location, at the Howard Johnson Paragon Hotel, from May 22- May 25.

According to Managing Director Wang Yannan, “In choosing the lots for the upcoming Spring Auction we continued the pursuit of highlight lots, and at the same time considered the market conditions, the academic and historical value of the artworks, as well as the quality of the artwork itself. We kept in mind a more level-headed approach to the development of this market when choosing each of the lots to join this auction. We believe this Guardian 2007 Spring Auction will show us a lot about the contemporary market in particular.”

Each department has accordingly put forth a fine selection of masterpieces. The Classical Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Department is presenting a very high-grade work by Dong Qichang, Fall Mountains for Yu Jian; in Contemporary Painting and Calligraphy, the ‘Jing Guan Ju Collection of Fine Works by Fu Baoshi and Zhang Daqian’ sale gathers characteristic and impressive works from both masters; Chinese Oil Painting presents a splendid and grand work by Chen Yifei, from 1972, Eulogy of the Yellow River, the piece that brought Chen Yifei’s name to the attention of the arts world and has gained significant attention for its reappearance on the market;

The Porcelain department is presenting a collection of 18 works of early Qing dynasty ceramics from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, as well as a Qing dynasty Yongzheng reign Grand Famille-Rose Censer for Imperial Use; Rare Books and Manuscripts has gathered wonderful works as well, including the Song dynasty block-printed Ten Volumes of the Wu Deng Hui Yuan (of which 5 are still together), the Yuan dynasty Ten Volumes of Rubbings and Inscriptions by Mr. Cang Ya, and the Qing dynasty, Qianlong and Jiaqing reign four-toned printing of The Collected Works of Tao Yuanming, in eight volumes, with additional volumes of the introduction and table of contents.

Of the masterworks for sale in the upcoming China Guardian Spring Auction, over 100 are traveling to Shanghai and Qingdao for preview exhibitions, including the massive work by Chen Yifei. The Shanghai preview will be from April 20-22 at the Shanghai Regent Hotel, and the Qingdao preview will be held April 25-27 at the Qingdao Shangri-La Hotel.

-Chinese Painting and Calligraphy-
The Classical Chinese Painting and Calligraphy sale will include some 230 works from the Song through Qing dynasties. The early work by the Southern Song dynasty master Ma Lin, titled Plum Blossoms and Bamboo, is preserved in superb condition, and is a work of the most rare variety. Equally as prized are works from the imperial catalogue called the ‘Stone Moat Treasures’, from which this auction includes four works: Qian Weicheng’s long hand scroll Mt. Yandang; Ding Guanpeng’s hand scroll, Boya Playing the Qin; a collaborative album by several imperial painters, including Chen Shang, Chen Mei, Dai Hong, and Zhang Weibang, titled Immortals Celebrating Longevity; and a work by the Qianlong Emperor himself, Three Friends of Winter. Yun Shouping’s album Landscapes after Classical Masters, Shi Tao’s Ink Lotuses, and Luo Pin’s Ancient Buddha Gazing at Flowers, are also each worthy of extended praise.

The individual sale of the ‘Jing Guan Ju Collection of Fine Works by Fu Baoshi and Zhang Daqian’ is bound to gain as much attention as its predecessor sale from this last Fall, and includes five works each from the two masters of modern Chinese painting, such as Giving Alms, by Fu Baoshi, and Waterfall Suspended in the Air by Zhang Daqian.

The house sale of Modern Chinese Painting and Calligraphy will include 450 works and covers all of the major names, from Qi Baishi and Wu Hufan to Li Keran and Xu Beihong.

-Chinese Oil Painting and Sculpture, Contemporary Art and Artistic Photography-
The Oil Painting department is still pursuing a mindset of “respect for history, respect for academics and respect for the market,” in making it’s choices for auction, maintaining rigorous standards for the artworks as well as aiming for fresh market approaches. Only the most brilliant and meaningful works are being recommended at auction for our collectors both abroad and at home. The structure of the China Guardian 2006 Fall Auction will be maintained, with sales of Chinese Oil Painting and Sculpture and Contemporary art, but will expand to add a new contemporary section of Artistic Photography.

Aside from the star-piece by Chen Yifei, Eulogy of the Yellow River, several other classic pieces by the artist will be auctioned, including Early Spring and On the Pilgrimage. The great early oil painter Xu Beihong will be represented by his work French Park alongside fine works by Lin Fenmian and Yan Wenliang. Important works by early Republic of China era innovators such as
Ding Yanyong, Li Zongjin and Hu Shangyu will also be prominent.

The contemporary sale will continue in the style of the 2006 Fall Auction’s ’20 Years of Contemporary Chinese Art’, with that same sense of respect for history and quality. It will include the photographic styles of Ren Jian and Zhang Dali, etc., the Pop and New Wave artists Wang Guangyi and Li Dachun, etc. Cynical Realism will be represented by Zhou Chunya, Yan Peiming, Zeng Fanzhi and Liu Anping, etc. Other important movements such as Academicism, Metaphorical and Allegorical painting and Folk Inspired art will also be well covered. A work of landmark significance in the career of Liu Xiaodong will be a highlight of the sale for certain. Titled Cooperation, it was painted in 1991 and the artist himself considers it a breakthrough work.

The new sales category of Contemporary Artistic Photography will focus largely on photography and present 100 works by the likes of Wang Qingsong, Ma Gang, Miao Shaochun and Cui Xiuwen, etc. This is the first auction within China of contemporary photography, which is becoming an important sector of the market and will undoubtedly only gain more attention in the coming years.
-Porcelain and Works of Art-
A Qing dynasty Yongzheng era Grand Famille-Rose Floral Censer is a highlight of the Porcelain and Works of Art sale, and its manufacture for imperial use, along with its ornate gilded decoration mark it as a rare piece indeed. Other fine works span the dynasties from the Ming, Yongle reign, to the Republic of China period. Another stand out item is the Ming dynasty, Yongle era, Blue and White Moon Flask, with its Western Asian flavor and form.

The sale of ‘Early Qing Dynasty Ceramics from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston’ marks not only the first time that the Museum of Fine Arts Boston has de-accessioned works in a foreign auction, but also sets a precedent for the first auction in China of de-accessioned works from a foreign museum. Guardian is once again proud and honored to bring the Chinese market another step foreword.

The Works of Art sale will include jade, rhinoceros horn, seals and bamboo carvings, etc. Fine jade works are in special abundance, including a White Jade Bats and Plum Branch Ruyi from the Qing dynasty, Qianlong era, and a White Jade Bats and Peaches Brush Washer from the Qianlong era. A rhinoceros horn carving of ‘Journey to Red Cliff’ will also be sure to excite collectors.

-Rare Books and Manuscripts-
The sale of Rare Books and Manuscripts is once again blessed with fine works from established collections, including those of the Xun Zhai, the old collection of Mr. Chen Chengzhong, and revered and long-established Weng family collection.

The Song dynasty printing of The Ten Volumes of the Wu Deng Hui Yuan, of which five are preserved, was once in the collection of Yuan Shikai’s second son, the rare books collector Yuan Kewen, and later moved to the Chen Family Xun Studio. The five albums constitute the sixth through tenth volumes of the original book, and the first through fifth volumes are in the collection of the National Library’s Rare Books Department, having been given in 1965 by the Chen Family.

The two albums of the Yuan dynasty, Zhizheng era 1345 printing of Ten Volumes of Rubbings and Inscriptions by Mr. Cang Ya, is a rarity among Yuan printings. It was assessed and signed by famous Qing dynasty printed books specialists and scholars such as Huang Pilie and Gu Guangyin, and has been circulated among many famous Ming and Qing dynasty collections and is without a doubt a piece worth of the label of ‘first-rate antiquity’.

-Coins, Stamps and Bronze Mirrors-

The Spring Auction of Coins, Stamps and Bronze Mirrors has been moved to May 22-25 at the Beijing Howard Johnson Paragon Hotel, and will take place in the third floor Banquet Hall, marking an important step in China Guardian development and structure. As the Chinese stamp and coin market increases in activity, a separation from the other departments will allow this market to stand and breath on its own, permitting greater variety of works and an increase in overall quality of service.

The sale will include a Bronze Mirrors category, and historic auctions of 800 works from the famous coin collection of Mr. Ma Ding Xiang, 300 items from the renowned stamp collection of Lin Song, and works from the famous collection of Li Anshen.
