For Haiti––Chinese Oil Painting and Sculpture Charity Auction, organized by leading Chinese artists to benefit Haiti’s earthquake victims and sponsored by China Guardian Auctions, was held Sunday evening March 21 in Beijing. Cai Guoqiang, Chen Danqing, Xu Bing, Zeng Fanzhi, Liu Xiaodong, Yu Hong, Sui Jianguo, and others contributed 35 high quality artworks to be auctioned without a reserve price. In the end, all works were sold to produce over 3,220,000 RMB ($471,000 USD) in total earnings that the artists will contribute to reconstruction efforts in Haiti. Most prized among the group was Cai Guoqiang’s Touring Mountains bought for 900,000 RMB. Other highlights were Zhan Wang’s Disaster Relief Stone No. 3 at 390,000 RMB, as well as Sui Jianguo’s Made in China and Chen Danqing’s Calligraphy of Tang Dynasty bringing in 310,000 RMB each. Wang Mingxian, Chen Wenling, Cui Xiuwen, Xiao Lu were among the artists, collectors, and gallery representatives who attended the pre-auction reception.
