China Guardian Leads China Art Auction Market with RMB 2.712 Billion Turnover

Recently, China Guardian published the company’s results for Year 2009. The 22,000 sold pieces from 6 categories (Chinese painting and calligraphy, porcelain and works of art, Chinese oil painting, sculpture & photography, ancient rare books, stamps, coins and bronze mirrors, and jewelries) have achieved a total turnover of up to RMB 2.712 billion yuan, the highest record since the establishment of the company 16 years ago, and 50% increase compared to the total turnover of RMB 1.8 billion yuan for the Year 2008, coming first on the list of Asia's auction houses. For the total revenue, Chinese painting contributed RMB 1.941 billion yuan, the highest for this category in the whole world.

In 2009, China Guardian has auctioned more than 8800 pieces of Chinese painting and calligraphy, achieving a total turnover of RMB 1.941 billion yuan, ranked No. 1 in the world for the category of Chinese painting and calligraphy. The achievement once again demonstrated China Guardian's strength in this category.

Among them, "Writings by Prominent Personage in the Song Dynasty on Attendant Xu’s Seal Character” by Zhu Xi, Zhang Jingxiu and others (Song and Yuan Dynasties) was sold at a high price of RMB 100.8 million yuan; while "Du Fu’s Poems in Cursive Hand” by Song Ke and “Hidden Peaks among Green Hills” by Xiao Yuncong were traded at the high price of RMB 68.32 million yuan and RMB 67.2 million yuan respectively. A Song Dynasty painting “Rui Ying Tu” (attributed to Xiao Zhao), a masterpiece which you can only meet by chance, was sold at a high price of RMB 58.24 million yuan. And the 17-meter long scroll by Wu Bin (Ming Dynasty) “A Copy of Li Gonglin’s Arhats” was transacted at 44.8 million Yuan. Jiang Zhaohe’s "The Chinese People Have since Stood Up" was auctioned at 19.04 million yuan, creating a new record for the artist; Dong Qichang’s calligraphy “Long Shen Gan Ying Ji” was sold at 44.8 million yuan, 2nd highest among Dong’s sold works; Huang Binhong's "Four Pieces of Light Crimson Landscape" was auctioned at 12.32 million yuan, 3rd highest among Huang’s sold works. In addition, the biggest piece known so far by Lan Ying "Dark Green Rock and Good Trees”, and Wang Guxiang’s "Flowers with Title Inscribed by Emperor Qianlong" were both sold at the same high price of RMB 13.44 million yuan.

For porcelain and art crafts, the annual turnover amounted to RMB 457 million yuan. A Ming Dynasty “Yue Lu Zhi Yin” lacquered Guqin was hammered at a high price of RMB 21.84 million yuan, setting a new record for the Ming Dynasty Guqin. Tapestry "Notes on Black Cloud Chamber by Emperor Qianlong" was auctioned at RMB 17.92 million yuan, the 4th highest among auctioned tapestry works; In addition, in the 2009 autumn auction, "Qing Emperor Qianlong Cloisonné famillie rose mountain & sea pattern covered bottle" was sold at a same high price of RMB 17.92 million yuan; and in the 2009 Spring Auction, the “Qianlong-era Under glaze Red Dragon Gourd Vase” was traded at a high price of 13.328 million yuan.

For the Chinese oil painting and sculpture category, Jin Shangyi’s only industry themed oil painting "Chairman Mao at the No. 3 Steel Mill" painted in 1969 was sold at RMB 20.216 million yuan; representative piece of the Cultural Revolution fine arts - Shen Jiawei’s "Guarding Our Great Motherland" was sold at RMB 7.952 million yuan, a new record for the painter; Wu Guanzhong's "Northern Scenery" was hammered at the highest price of RMB 30.24 million Yuan, the 4th highest among the painter’s sold pieces.

For stamps and coins, Qing Dynasty Emperor Xianfeng Coin "Great Qing 100", the only piece of its kind in the world, was sold at a high price of RMB 1.96 million yuan, setting a new record for ancient coins. A "Long Live the Complete Victory of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution" (commonly known as the "Big Red One") unissued stamp was traded at a high price of RMB 2.8 million yuan, creating a new record for this stamp in Mainland China. In the 2009 Spring Auction, Mrs. S. P. Ting’s Collection of Chinese Military Notes and Bonds, altogether 784 lots, showed a 100% turnover rate with total sales reaching RMB 8.539 million yuan, which is really a miracle for ancient coin auction.

For ancient rare books, 27 letters from friends kept by Hu Shi were auctioned at a high price of RMB 7.448 million yuan; Ming Dynasty Emperor Wanli edition "Song Edition of the Six Classics” was sold at RMB 2.688 million yuan; "Correspondence of Master Hong Yi and others” by Li Shutong was auctioned at RMB 2.576 million yuan.

In addition, in 2009, China Guardian was authorized by the 2009 World Stamp Exhibition Organizing Committee as the exclusive auction partner to hold the "2009 World Stamp Exhibition China Guardian Stamp Auction" during the Exhibition time. This is the 2nd time that China Guardian got this great honor following the 1999 World Stamp Exhibition. On April 12, 2009, the "2009 World Stamp Exhibition China Guardian Stamp Auction" was successfully hammered in Luoyang City with total sales of RMB 6.22 million yuan and turnover rate over 85%.

In February 2009, China Guardian held overseas collection events in the United States and Japan respectively, which was also the first ever large-scale overseas collection for China Guardian. Following that in July the company went to the United States and Japan again and at the same time held large-scale collection events in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
