Guo Tong
Person in Charge for the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy section:
The success of the Spring Auctions with a total turnover of 2.138 billion yuan gave us great joy and witnessed the reinvigoration of the Chinese painting and calligraphy market after a dismal period. Besides, China’s art market is also seeing a period of “change”, a transition from a long-run sellers’ market to a more demanding buyer’s market.
Contemporary Chinese painting and calligraphy
There were 104 items shown at the Grand View: Chinese Painting Highlight·Modern session. The total sales volume of the session reached 1.152 billion yuan, with a turnover ratio of 83%. Apart from Huang Binhong’s Yellow Mountain and Pan Tianshou’s After Plough, which sold for over 100 million yuan, masterpieces from Li Keran, Fu Baoshi, Zhang Daqian and Xu Beihong also were hammered at good prices. They showed the vitality of China’s art market and great works often have great potential to be sold at a worthy price.

Dai Wei
General Manager of the Contemporary Chinese Painting and Calligraphy section
Auctions of Chinese modern and contemporary painting and calligraphy, including nine special sessions, lasted for three days at this season. Since the preview, we met many of our old customers and also got to know many new friends from almost all the provinces in China, as well as many from abroad. At auctions, they were very active on taking a bid on items, from which we saw the vitality of the Chinese art market.
From the beginning to the end, we were very surprised to find that each session was popular among customers and the bidding was also quite fierce. At last, the section of Chinese modern and contemporary painting and calligraphy achieved a high total transaction volume, exceeding 1.5 billion yuan. The hammer price of many items broke historic records. We are glad to see Chinese modern and contemporary painting and calligraphy are very much in demand in China’s art market.
We are honored to receive a warm market feedback after six months’ of great efforts. This autumn, we will move to the newly-built Guardian Art Center, and we expect to meet more collectors.

Luan Jingli
General Manager of the Ancient Chinese Painting and Calligraphy section
The result for the Chinese classical painting and calligraphy section was as expected. It was more stable than the market for contemporary works. On the one hand, the number of customers in this section was relatively small. The customers’ participation also was not as high as the section for Chinese modern and contemporary painting and calligraphy. On the other hand, new buyers of Chinese classical painting and calligraphy were fewer. The old collectors were prudent in selling and the items were given a relatively high reserve price, which made the selling a bit difficult.
The popular items in this section were often those with a lower estimated price. Even those good works were in the hope of giving a lower valuation to offer a large bidding space and to boost collectors’ participation and enthusiasm. Besides, the supply of Chinese classical painting and calligraphy works was scarce. Once the collectors bought their favored items, they will be cherished as treasures and seldom taken out to the market again. In this auction season, dozens of items shown at the Grand View: Chinese Painting Highlight?Classical were auctioned for the first time and had never appeared on the art market before, which gained the attention of our customers.
In addition, collectors nowadays not only have abundant funds, but also good research capacity. One customer even shared his research with us and gave a bid at a high price.
20th Century and Contemporary Chinese Art
The section of 20th Century and Contemporary Chinese Art showed many masterpieces from great painters, raising a total sales volume of 135 million yuan.
The session, 20th Century and Contemporary Chinese Art Evening Sale, saw a turnover ratio of 84% and a total sales volume of 107 million yuan. Luo Zhongli’s Spring Silkworm was sold at 49.45 million yuan (including commission), setting a new auction record for the painter.
There were 135 works up for auction in this section. Chen Zhen’s installation art Continuous Sound was sold for 3.335 million yuan, setting a new auction record for the artist. Four works from Wuchang Art Specialized Institute were sold out. Works from two artists, Yang Liguang and Tang Yihe, were all hammered at the highest prices in their auction record.

Li Yanfeng
General Manager of the 20th Century and Contemporary Chinese Art section:
The successful auction of Spring Silkworm proved that academic pieces with an historical art value are a big boost in the art market. It’s a typical example of China Guardian’s strategy of academics leading the market. And it also means that collectors are keeping up on study and research, with some even taking a lead in front of us. This is a good signal and an encouragement for our future auction consignment.
In general, I’m very satisfied with the turnover rates at the evening auctions. The fierce competition on some items was an encouragement to our work. The daytime auctions also had a good performance, which means we did a good job in selecting items during the consignment. In the future, we will keep working hard.
